Addressing farmers sitting on dharna at Porbander to demand raise in minimum support price for groundnut and cotton, former Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee(GPCC) president Arjun Modhwadia demanded that MSP for groundnut and cotton be hilked to Rs. 1200 and 1500 per 20 kg immediately.
“If the BJP government does not accept farmers demand, the farmer would conduct ‘surgical strike’ against the party in 2017 assembly elections,” Modhwadia remarked during his speech. Stating that BJP had promised to increase the MSP of groundnut and cotton by one and a half times during 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modhwadia said that BJP had completely failed to keep the promises. He said that MSP had not been raised at all and it is the same as it was before 2014. He said that groundnut and cotton cultivation had become costly due to increase in input cost like seed, fertiliser, insecticide and pesticide as also the labour cost.
“Taken together the cost of all inputs, farmers are suffering huge losses at the current MSP. To ensure that farmers get some profit, MSP be raised to Rs. 1200 per 20 kg for groundnut and Rs. 1500 per 20 kg for cotton”, demanded Modhwadia. Cotton and groundnut are the biggest cash crop of Gujarat.
