Tension prevailed in Khara village of Liliya taluka in Amreli district on Saturday after a youth was allegedly stabbed to death by his neighbours following a minor scuffle the previous night.
Police said that Dilip Garaniya (22) and Haku Khuman had an altercation over driving motorcyles in the village at around 7:30 pm on Friday. Later on, Dilip and his father Popat went to Haku’s home to rebuke him. However, Haku and his three family members allegedly assaulted the father-son duo with axe and knives. While Dilip sustained stab wounds in his abdomen, his father was hit by axe in thigh, police said.
“Private hospitals in Amreli refused treatment to Dilip and therefore he was being taken to Rajkot. However, he died on way to Rajkot,” Amreli Deputy superintendent of police (DySP), Rakesh Sharma told The Indian Express on Saturday.
Popat was being treated in a private hospital in Amreli and his condition was reported to be out of danger, police further said. The alleged murder had the village tense as the victim and the accused belong to two different caste groups and police said.
In his complaint, Popat named Babu Khuman, his sons Haku and Bharat and wife Labhu as accused. Based on this complaint, Liliya police booked the four for murder.
“The village is calm and no untoward incident has been reported since the violence last evening. As a precautionary measure, however, we have deployed police in the village. The family of the victim is waiting for his body to arrive from Bhavnagar after post-mortem and we shall be on alert during his funeral,” Sharma further said.
“The accused managed to run away after the assault. Efforts are on to nab them,” Sharma added.
