The Congress members who met Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner on Tuesday got no “assurance” over a plea to provide an alternative space to roadside vendors in Teen Darwaja area. Under the Rs 74-crore Bhadra Fort revitalisation project, the vendors will be evacuated from the area.

The fort area houses around 3,000 vendors who earn their daily bread there. The Congress held a public meeting in front of the AMC office on Tuesday demanding an alternative for the vendors and threatened a prolonged fight.

“The hope of getting a fair chance of livelihood after recent passage of Street Vendor Policy Bill will be dashed if the pleas of local vendors are ignored,” said Congress leader Badruddin Shaikh and city Congress president Pankaj Shah in the memorandum to civic body commissioner.

Demanding a fresh survey, the Congress members also said that the AMC survey had identified only 85,000 vendors in the city, while the actual number would cross 1.50 lakh vendors.

The meeting was attended by senior party leaders like J V Momin,Pankaj Shah among others.
