Ahmedabad: 19 arrested for duping US citizens through call centre

Police said the accused were cheating American citizens by posing as officials of US tax department.

The cyber crime cell of Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch Tuesday arrested 19 persons for running an international call centre illegally in Vastrapur area. Police said the accused were cheating American citizens by posing as officials of US tax department. Police said they raided the office on the 4th floor of Maurya Atria building where accused Hitendra Davda, 29, and Sandip Rajvani, 21, were running the call centre with the help of about 15 men and women. Police said that the accused used to make calls to people in the US and speak to them in American accent possing as Internal Revenue Service officers and local police officers.

The police seized CPU, 21 mobile phones, three laptops, four hard discs and scripts which were used in talking to victims. Police said that the accused were running the call centre for the past one year and had taken the office on a monthly rent of Rs1 lakh. The accused have allegedly told the police that they were earning $11,000 monthly.
