Miffed at the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials for not informing her about the cancellation of a foundation stone laying ceremony of a drainage line in the city, Limbayat constituency BJP MLA Sangita Patil laid the foundation stone of a drainage line in ward no 18 at M B Nagar in Limbayat zone on Monday. She also posted the pictures on her Facebook page.

As per the protocol, the local corporators have to be invited for any SMC function in their respective wards. Though the SMC Limbayat Zone officials had sent a formal invitation to Sangita Patil, Limbayat MLA, they had not invited ward no 18, Anjana Khatodara corporators — Aslam Cyclewala, Shailesh Rayka, Lilaben Sonavne and Kapilaben Patel — who belong to Congress.

According to sources, Sangita Patil, BJP MLA who is a close aide of BJP MP C R Patil, accepted the invitation and confirmed it to Limbayat Zone officials, on Sunday. On learning about the breach of protocol, Cyclewala called up the zonal officials and threatened to stall all works in their zone. Following the threat, SMC called off the official event but failed to inform the BJP MLA and leaders.

On Monday at 11 am, Patil reached the spot along with party ward president Vijay Rana and other local leaders. Since no one was present at the site, she called up the SMC officials who told her that the event had been cancelled because of the threat.

The annoyed MLA decided went ahead with the ceremony and posted the pictures on her social media page.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Patil said, “When I reached the spot today morning, no one was present there. Immediately, I contacted the SMC officials who informed me that the programme had been cancelled. I came to know from my sources that Congress councillors had threatened the municipal officials to disrupt the ceremony forcing them to cancel the event at last minute. After this, I laid the foundation stone.”

When contacted, A M Dubey, executive engineer of Limbayat zone said, “Generally, we used to invite local MLA, corporators of that ward and the contractor for any such event. But this time, our lower level staff had inadvertently failed to invite the corporators. This had enraged the corporators who retaliated with disruption threat resulting in the cancellation of the programme. We learnt about MLA Sangita Patil going ahead with the foundation stone laying today. However, we will officially perform the foundation stone laying ceremony soon.”

Congress corporator Cyclewala said, “It is the duty of the SMC officials to extend a formal invitation to the municipal councillors of the respective wards for any foundation stone laying or inauguration programme. We lodged our protest for breach of protocol and threatened to disrupt all SMC works in our ward. Realising their mistake the SMC officials had cancelled the programme. Even after this, BJP MLA Sangita Patil went with a few BJP local leaders and laid the foundation stone.”
