Police have booked eight people, including the organisers of a puja pandal, for violation of police commissioner’s notification regarding the height of Ganesh idol that states that the idols should not be above nine feet.

A 15-feet Ganesh idol, which could not be immersed on Wednesday, was immersed by the organisers on Thursday.

On Thursday night, thousands of people took out procession from Mahidharpura,Suthar Street to Chowk Bazaar Dukka Ovara to immerse the 15-feet idol.

The police were also present when the procession was taken out from Mahidharpura to Chowk Bazaa,to overcome any untoward incident,as the organisers had taken permission from police.

On Wednesday, the organisers had taken the Ganesh idol on a hand cart and roamed in different ovaras to get it immersed. However, they failed to do so as the people involved in the immersion work demanded Rs. 25000 for it. So the organisers took the idol back to the pandal on Wednesday night to return with it for immersion a day later.

The arrested persons have been identified as Kiran Wagh,Jignesh Wagh,Hemant Wagh,Paresh Bhavsar,Rocky,Umesh Anajwala,Suresh, and Nitin Lakdawla, all residents of Mahidharpura.

Mahidharpura police inspector K C Rajput said,“We have arrested the

organisers for allegedly violating the police commissioner notification on the height of an idol.

gWe have also taken Surat City Ganesh Utsav Samithi into confidence and they have agreed to our decision. The organisers have informed us to take out procession for immersion of Ganesh idol on the second day and we agreed, keeping in mind the religious sensitivities of the people at large.”
