Four private universities are likely to be incorporated under the Gujarat Private Universities Act,2009 in the upcoming Assembly session.

Eight more applications are currently being scrutinised by the education department, state education secretary Hasmukh Adhia said.

The four private universities are the Ahmedabad University and the the Calorx Teacher’s University (both in Ahmedabad),the Navrachna University (Vadodara) and the Charotar University of Science and Technology,Changa.

The 2009 Act was brought in so that a new act need not to be passed for every new varsity that is to be set up in the state.

These private universities will not be entitled to receive any grant-in-aid or financial assistance from state or central governments. They will, however,be allowed to run affiliated colleges.

At a session on education in the run-up the Vibrant Gujarat Summit earlier this month, the education department had also distributed copies of the Act to participants, many of whom were from foreign universities.
