A day after two top officials from the VAT department office in Jamnagar were trapped by the Rajkot Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while taking a bribe, the commercial inspector was also arrested in this connection on Friday.
The arrested official has been identified as Mulu Gadhvi. He was caught accepting cash to the tune of Rs 7,000 from a tax consultant from Kalawad,Mansukh Bhalodia,to push his files. The ACB has, meanwhile, begun the process to nab the assistant commissioner, commercial tax,who is reportedly the main accused.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Bhalodia, who wanted to get cleared seven VAT numbers, was asked to pay Rs 34,000 to speed up the process by N C Mehta,Assistant Commissioner,Commercial Tax. When Bhalodia negotiated the deal, the officer agreed to do the job for Rs 24,000.
According to the ACB,Bhalodia, who had already given a sum of Rs 17,000,had been pressurised on regular basis by Mehta to pay the rest of the amount. After this,he approached the ACB.
On Thursday,Bhalodia went to the VAT office to pay Rs 7,000. He was accompanied by an ACB team. Mehta, who not present at the office, directed Bhalodia to leave the cash with Gadhvi. The latter was caught taking the bribe and booked under the provisions of the anti-corruption act.
