Zero obstruction and encroachment-free ‘model roads’ are set to replace some of the busiest stretches across the city. After evaluating the success of phase I roads,Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is all set to launch phase II of the ‘model roads’ project that will cover a stretch of nearly 40 kilometres in the six zones.

With an estimated budget of Rs 161 crore, the project will cover 19 roads that will be converted into ‘model’ ones within a year. Officials said the roads were identified after carrying out traffic surveys and feasibility plan. The selected stretches witness heavy traffic throughout the day, especially during peak hours.

Apart from these stretches,Ashram Road — one of the main city roads — that also connects Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar is expected to be included in the second phase. Though this section of the road has also been identified for the proposed Metro Rail project, the AMC is planning to convert it into a model road on priority basis.

“The first phase of model roads, including Judges Bungalow road, had received a good response from residents and there had been a demand of developing other roads on this model. Thus,in the second phase, there is a stretch of 40 kilometres and another 10 kilometres of Ashram Road is also being planned,” said municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.

Of the total project length of 39.4 kilometres, west zone gets the maximum share of 15.9 kilometres on seven different roads, followed by south zone with nearly six kilometres on four roads.

Apart from being encroachment-free,some of the features of these model roads are 60-100 feet of wall-to-wall stretch with 1.5 metre of footpath on either side and a divider. The divider would be one-metre wide to accommodate plantation.

Other features include informative and cautionary signages and free left turns at junctions. Also, there will be parking facility along the roads, depending on the availability of space.
