’08 serial blasts case gets fifth designated judge

The 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case has got the fifth designated judge with the Gujarat High Court appointing Additional Principal Judge of the Ahmedabad City Civil & Sessions Court,Dr Jyotsana Yagnik,to hold the further trial.

The 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case has got the fifth designated judge with the Gujarat High Court appointing Additional Principal Judge of the Ahmedabad City Civil & Sessions Court,Dr Jyotsana Yagnik,to hold the further trial.

Yagnik has also been conducting trial of the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case.

The development was confirmed by Registrar General of the HC,G R Udhwani.

Udhwani said while Yagnik has been designated to hold trial of the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case,K B Gujarati,who was posted at Judicial Academy at the HC,has been transferred as special CBI judge in Ahmedabad.

The court proceedings in the serial blasts case are being conducted inside the Sabarmati Central Jail. And trial in the case is yet to start. The first designated judge for the case,Bela Trivedi,had framed charges against the accused. However,later the proceedings were stayed by the Supreme Court following a petition by the accused. The stay has been vacated by the apex court some time back.

More than 65 persons are under judicial custody in the case and many of them are from different states of the country like Uttar Pradesh,Karnataka,Maharashtra etc.

Around 57 persons were killed on July 26,2008 when serial blasts had rocked different parts of the city.

Ahmedabad city Detection of Crime Branch had detected the case and held a pan-India module of Indian Mujahideen responsible for the same.
