Out of Samsung, Vineet Taneja joins Micromax as CEO

'We are witnessing an inflection point in the smart devices globally.'

Stepping up the battle in the Indian mobile handset market, homegrown firm Micromax has roped in Samsung India’s mobile and IT business chief Vineet Taneja as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Micromax, the country’s second largest smartphone player, expects the move to help it further strengthen its position in the segment, which is witnessing explosive growth.

“This move is a testimony to the vision and commitment that Micromax co-founders have of bringing in the best talent to build a strong organisation and capitalise the opportunities in this environment of data devices explosion,” Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma told PTI.

The appointment will help the company consolidate its strong presence in the market, drive global partnerships and strategic alliances, while strengthening the organisational capabilities within Micromax, he added.

“Vineet will be an asset in our next phase of growth, his diverse experience will be a great addition to the Micromax leadership in India both from organisational set-up and business growth perspective,” he said.

With over 25 years of experience, Taneja has worked with consumer brands like Hindustan Lever, Nokia and Bharti Airtel, prior to Samsung. He holds a degree in engineering from IIT-Roorkee and is an alumnus of IIM-Kolkata.

“We are witnessing an inflection point in the smart devices globally. Therefore, it is a great opportunity for me to lead Micromax into its next phase of growth by consolidating and further strengthening its position in India, and looking at global markets to complete its transition of becoming a global force to reckon with,” Taneja said.

The company’s former CEO Deepak Mehrotra had quit the firm in October last year, citing personal reasons, and Sharma was managing affairs in the interim.

Earlier this month, reports of Taneja quitting Samsung had surfaced, but the company had declined to comment saying it “does not comment on rumour or speculation”.

According to IDC, smartphone sales in the country grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by a strong uptake of affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn.

Previously, he has also served as Chief Marketing Officer for Nokia India and as Vice President (Sales & Marketing) for the beverages and foods business at Hindustan Lever.

Similar to global trends, Samsung is the market leader in smartphone category in India too, a segment that grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013.

While Samsung led the category (38 per cent), Micromax had 16 per cent, Karbonn (10 per cent), Sony (5 per cent) and Lava (4.7 per cent) in the fourth quarter of 2013.

In the overall mobile phone segment too, it was the number one player with a 19 per cent share in Q4 2013, according to research firm IDC.

          Micromax is the worst phones. I will suggest not to buy these handset. I have submitted my phone for repair 1.5 month before but till now the executives are making me fool by saying that my set is under repair or it is repaired and you will get the message with in a week. But till now i did not get any message regarding my handset. Within 3 month of purchasing the set it started creating problem. How could you make people fool by selling your defective handsets and even if the customer is giving his/her set to your service center they don't even pick up the call and customers keeps on waiting for more than one hour. your executives put the calls on hold. Is this the right way to provide services to customers. I need correct and exact information regarding my handset. When will you deliver my set. Docket no. of my ph is NO 40444-1114-13491749.. I have seen many customers who are facing the same problem. Stop making people fool and send my handset back immediately.

            Hi Vineet, If you are really respect your customer then please resolve my problem. My new b tab is in your service center from last 75days. Are there technical person or joker? They are not taking seriously customer complaints. Robbing to customers. Pl call 8755998235 Thanks

              I am Vinod patki. on 25th Dec purchased Micromax 40'' full HD TV from HOMENEEDonline. On 17th Jan TV stopped working.I lodged complaint. As on date No one attended. Is it a FAILED PRODUCT ? The CEO. of Micromax Will take interest to get repaired ? or EXCHANGE the set.

I face same issue 2 times in last 1 months.My humble request to you guys please take care of this ticket and resolved ........Since last 20 days i am getting same message from your team " we have escalated your case to the concerned team on priority basis". What is exactly mean this only for my satisfaction or your are doing some thing extra effort.I want exact date on which i will got my handset in working condition. now 1 months has been p.................. it's enough.If you guy's need any clarification then please call 8425040351 .Within 3 month of purchasing the set it started creating problem.                       WORST PHONE COMPANY my phone stopped working in just around 8 months i gave it for repair in service centre and I'm not getting my phone back it's almost a month ago friends never buy a micromax phone they are frauds phones don't have one year life even i suggest you ever ever buy a micromax phone better to buy a Samsung less featured phones or Nokia. They don't know how to run a company. I won't buy a micromax ever they just ruin us

                          i purchase new handset micromax eg111 after one months back cdma not working i go to service centre they give me 30 days time to repair my phone ...now 30 days is over and now 15 days more time they ask.if micromax ceo heard my voice than replace my phone or refund my money .....this is my complaint no 0605143525........i strongally recommend to people dont buy micromax phone ....RegardsK.Singh

                            Never I will buy Micromax phones. Bought A290 2months back lot of problems with the charging section. The customer care does not know how to respond to the customer complaint and you can't escalate the issue to the next level
