Using satellite technology, the sugar industry has estimated total cane acreage at 53.54 lakh hectare for the 2012-13 season, about 1.3 per cent higher than the government estimate for the same period.

The pan-India satellite-based area survey jointly commissioned by Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) and National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF),has pegged total cane area for the season starting October at 53.54 lakh hectare,ISMA said in a statement.

This is two per cent more than 2011-12 crop area and about 1.3 per cent higher than the government estimate of 52.88 lakh hectare for the 2012-13 crop year,it added.

Due to lower rainfall this year in some parts of the country, sugarcane yield would be affected and also some cane is being diverted for fodder,it said.

According to the satellite data, sugarcane acreage in Maharashtra – country’s biggest sugar producing state – is pegged at 9.78 lakh hectare in the 2012-13 season.

“It is accordingly estimated that sugarcane availability in Maharashtra during 2012- 13 will be from 9.04 lakh hectares of total area. This is after considering cane diversion for fodder and also fresh adsali plantation for harvesting in 2013-14 season,” the ISMA said.

While sugarcane acreage in Karnataka is estimated at 4.23 lakh hectares for 2012-13,cane area in Tamil Nadu is likely to be slightly higher than 2011-12,it said, adding that the satellite images for June and August period have been taken in account while estimating total cane area.

Going forward,ISMA said it will procure satellite images at least four times in a year during March-April,June-July,August-September and December-January,to watch the situation right from germination till harvesting.

The industry body ISMA also said that for the first time, satellite survey of cane area of 75 individual mills has been taken and digitally mapped the command area of each mills to understand the crop distribution, its intensity and cane availability.

Based on satellite database,ISMA said mills will be advised during the mid-crushing season about total harvestable cane left in the fields.

The next satellite survey report would be announced during December-January period,it added.

Based on satellite mapping, sugar production was pegged at 26 million tonnes for the 2011-12 crop year. But actual production will be 26.2 million tonne, the industry body said.
