Coal secretary Anil Swarup on Thursday said that following the ‘zero coal import’ policy which public power generation utilities have agreed to follow, the import of coal would lower considerably from the next financial year onwards and that the coal ministry was looking at lowering coal import by 15 million tonne as soon as possible.
“Since the public power generation entities have agreed to follow this zero import policy from next fiscal, coal imports would come down substantially. The objective is to reduce dependence on coal imports since that would be supplemented by increased domestic coal production,” he said at an event conducted by the MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
