The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is set to operationalise its planned high security coupon system that will serve as currency at around 370 toll plazas across the country beginning Thursday.

Printed in denominations ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 100, the coupons will serve as currency for toll on national highways and for return as change to motorists after toll deduction.

While the proposal had come in the wake of government’s decision to not extend toll exemption on national highways beyond December 2, a government official told The Indian Express that the coupons have been printed and they will get operational beginning Thursday.

The coupons are expected to ease the challenge of returning change to toll payers due to shortage of lower denomination currencies. The coupons would be in denominations of Rs 5, 10, 50 and 100.
