Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke protocol as he received the Crown Prince on his arrival here. Modi welcomed Sheikh Mohamed with a warm embrace as the latter alighted from his aircraft at the Palam Technical Area here. The crown prince is being accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers. It is the Crown Prince’s first state visit to India.

Explaining about the day, Swaraj said in the year 2003, under the leadership of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a decision was taken to celebrate Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas on January 9. She further stated that the reason behind selecting January 9 for Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas was that Mahatma Gandhi had returned from South Africa on this day in 1915 and this day is being celebrated across the world.
